Defining a New Course

With the majority of high school courses, definitions are fairly standard and universal.  But with less common technical electives such as Robotics, there is room for creativity.  Course definition can depend in part on local conditions, such as facilities and equipment available.  The course definition and goals can also depend on other courses offered, such a programming or electronics.

At Corvallis High School, due to new restrictions on enrollment, advanced electives are becoming unusual.  If an elective course does not have a minimum of 25 students enrolled, it will not be offered.  To have advanced electives will require sufficient students coming from previously restricted classes, like a food chain pyramid.  The smaller the base, the shorter the pyramid.

This being the case, it makes more sense to have a class at a level where prerequisites are not required.  This is not my first choice.  I would rather have students with some technical course background such as electronics, programming, metals, or drafting.  But if it means not having a course, it is best to accept all student, and perhaps plan for future changes if enough interest is there.
